Amazing 120 lbs weight loss story:

I've been overweight since I was a kid. I've dieted over the years and even thought about weight-loss surgery. I had really given up on losing weight and figured that I would be morbidly obese for the rest of my life. That all changed in May 2007, when a dear friend suggested that we do Adventure Boot Camp together. My first thought was that she had finally lost her mind. She explained that her friend, Shannon, was starting a Boot Camp for women at all fitness levels. Fitness wasn't a word that was ever in my vocabulary. That day, when I agreed to try Boot Camp, I made a decision that truly changed my life. My friend won't take credit for it, but her idea has literally saved my life.
I was very skeptical that I could survive Boot Camp and thought that I as doomed for failure. After a very emotional meeting with Shannon, I decided to give it a try. The three-day June 2007 Boot Camp started at 5:45AM one Monday morning. I had no idea about what was about to happen. I won't lie - it was brutal. Luckily, I had my friend by my side to help me through it. We laughed and cried through that first camp. Being the largest girl in camp, I was always coming in last and having to modify various moves. I was icing my knees at night because they hurt terribly and were swollen like I've never seen. Shannon took the time to send me emails on a weekly basis during the early camps to let me know that she saw my growing as a person, and that I was improving and growing physically stronger every day.
All the girls in camp were very supportive, too, but I constantly struggled with being last and was embarrassed by my size and "fitness" level. I actually survived June camp and saw results, which was exciting. Unfortunately, later that summer, my friend had stopped attending Boot Camp and I lost my rock. I decided not to quit, even though I would have no one with me at the end of the line. It was very difficult for me to continue, but I did with the support and encouragement of Shannon, as well as my family and friends. I have also met many extraordinary women in boot camp, whom I now consider to be great friends. Their support and encouragement, as well as ability to make me laugh when I wanted to cry, inspired me to continue.
At this time, I was also trying to watch what I ate, but was disappointed with my weight loss. Finally, in January 2008, after losing 24 pounds while continuing to do Boot Camp, I got up the courage to join Weight Watchers at Work. I finally resolved myself to the fact that everyone at work knew that I was fat, so why be embarrassed by it. I have had great success with Weight Watchers and Boot Camp combined. I have attended every Boot Camp except December 2007. I am now attending 5 days a week, and do BoxFit with Shannon on Saturdays. I feel amazing and stronger than ever. I actually ran my first 5K in April, and have plans to do another one in May. If you asked me about that possibility 2 years ago, I would have just laughed!
I didn't think that the results that I've seen were even possible. I have always dreamed of being at a healthy weight and in shape, and it is now becoming a reality. To date, I've lost 104 pounds and 49 inches. In addition, I no longer have high blood pressure or high cholesterol. I still have more weight to lose, and am motivated more than ever to continue. The results that I'm seeing are astonishing to me. I never thought that what I have accomplished in these last 18 months in terms of fitness and weight loss was possible for me. I have tried so many times over the years to lose weight, but with no success. I needed someone to led the way and show me that I could do it and that I am worth it.
I've promised myself that I will not quit and will continue this journey because anything is possible. I am truly blessed to have met Shannon Barbato, as she has changed my life. I have self-confidence like never before, and am a completely different person than I was when I started. I finally believe in myself and know that I'm worth it! This has been a difficult journey, but well worth it. I've hit many lows - funks as I call them. I worked through them and came out on the other side with Shannon's assistance and support.
Thank you, Shannon! I LOVE BOOT CAMP!

Shannon, 5
months ago I decided I was going to run the Marine Corp Marathon in
Washington D.C. With my running career consisting of mostly 5k's I
knew I had to train on a different level so I decided to join
Adventure Boot Camp .The camp was excellent; The overall workouts
were demanding and after a month I started to feel stronger while
running. I decided to make Adventure Boot camp workouts the primary
preparation for the marathon. Truly, it is your enthusiasm that made
me excited to return each morning at 5:30 a.m.. At age 50, you
helped me set and complete a goal and surpass my own expectations. I
completed the 26.2 miles in a time of 4:11:57 (9:37 pace) I want to
thank you for the time spent preparing me to meet my personal goal.
I am convinced without your guidance and spirit, my success would
not be as notable.
I thank you.
Marie Gorman- Espinosa
Shannon, I just
wanted to thank you for offering such a great program. I Love It!
This is the best
thing I've ever done for myself.
Maureen Willard
At age 39, my
metabolism has slowed down. The result of not taking the time to
stay fit was weight gain and high cholesterol. Facing a cholesterol
level of 260, I knew I had to do something extreme. I joined
Adventure Boot Camp.
After 8 weeks of
camp with Shannon, I feel like a new person. Taking time for my self
has been wonderful. This program has given me more energy and
confidence. Most importantly, I have regained my good health. My
cholesterol level is down to 170!!!I truly feel empowered to be the
best I can be.
Susan Looney
I have lost 35
pounds and 15 inches so far at Adventure Boot camp! WOO HOO!
Shannon, I could
not have done this without you. For many years I have struggled with
my weight, but Thanks to YOU and boot camp I am on my way! You make
working out so much fun. Your enthusiasm is what keeps me going. I
have tried all kinds of programs before and failed, but you and your
program are different. I never am bored around you!
I feel so
blessed to have met you and to have the opportunity to be a part of
this Adventure. I am going to keep pursuing my goal. 45 more lbs to
go!
Thank you!
Nancy Campbell , Foxboro Mass
Shannon, I just
wanted to thank YOU for this dynamite program you created and
brought to our area. I truly feel stronger than ever before in my
life, and I actually am in clothing sizes I was in before children
18 years ago. The challenge you set before us is achievable because
you expect the best from us each day. My family and friends are so
proud! I started this program and never looked back with your help.
You have taught us how to eat well and SMILE way more often! You are
an inspiration, a drill sergeant, a believer in those that do not
feel ready to believe in themselves, a comic to the tenth power and
on of the most positive people I have met in a long while. You make
me LAUGH so hard!
Thank you!
Lynn Regan, Norton Mass
I was "SO"
excited to see you Ad for Boot Camp.
4 months into
camp and I am still loving it! Boot camp is such a positive part of
my life. I love the feeling I have on days I go to camp. I don't
know how you do it, but each and every day challenging and
different! I love it!!!
Marcie Tredo
Nearly five
months after my first boot camp session, I am still hooked!
Whether indoors
or out, Shannon does not disappoint- keeping us on out toes for the
entire hour. Her dedication is unwavering, and her spirit inspiring!
My initial goal for camp was weight loss, but I have achieved so
much more than I ever imagined:
Strength,
confidence, and a better sense of the person I want to be!
Thank you!
Casssandra Hunt
Shannon, Thank
you so much for being you! Your energy and enthusiasm is amazing and
I‘ve had so much fun. I never thought I would enjoy working out,
because I never have before. Your energy and pure happiness should
be bottled! I love how you always make us feel like we can
accomplish anything. Your positive attitude starts my day on the
right foot.. You helped me find an inner strength I never knew I had
and I want to thank you for that.

Adventure Boot Camp is the best thing I have done for myself in
years and I am thankful to have Shannon Barbato as a special part of
my life. I have been doing boot camp with Shannon for 6 months and
was one of her first campers in June 2006. My goals of weight loss,
building muscle tone, strength and endurance were achieved. I lost
5 1/2 inches, 5% body fat, 7 pounds and dropped 2 pant sizes.
As a
former athlete and 38 year old mother of three (ages 6, 4 and 2) , I
needed to do something for myself and was looking to get back into
my pre-pregnancy shape and on an exercise routine. I was skeptical
about
exercising so early in the morning because I am not a morning
person, but boot camp and Shannon gets me excited to get out of bed
and start my day. I have changed my sleeping and eating habits
thanks to Shannon's and the nutritionist's advice.
Shannon's positive outlook on life, energetic personality and
terrific smile and laugh are enough to get anybody
going in the morning. Her energy is contagious and her enthusiasm
is empowering. Shannon has a gift for making sure that all levels
of fitness are equally challenged. Her daily emails to the team are
extremely motivating and informational.
It's
true that exercise gives you more energy and relieves stress. I am
proof. I feel younger, stronger and more confident.
Kristin Waryas
Shannon is a fantastic instructor!! Who would have thought I would
look forward to getting up at 5 am to exercise. She makes working
out fun and exciting. Her work-outs are always different every day
and with her positive attitude and cheeriness, she makes every day a
great experience.
Thanks so much for the motivation and good times at Adventure Boot
Camp Shannon!!
Susan Roberts
When I first read that I could
lose inches and gain strength in 4 weeks, I was skeptical. Four
week later I am slimmer, stronger and more confident than I ever
expected. When friends and family notice the difference in me, I
love to tell them all about my experience. I can't wait for the
next session to start. You are truly motivating and make the grind
of working out unpredictable and fun!
Thank you so much for being such
an inspiration…both physically and spiritually.
Liz Hall
A few words to
describe boot camp with Shannon—amazing, inspiring, fun, ever
changing, and no messing around! This is exercise in an environment
where you will never feel judged. You work at your own pace, but
Shannon is there to push you and motivate you! Every class is
different and it keeps you on your toes. This is my first camp and
I am already enrolled for my second one. 5:45 a.m. seemed crazy to
me but now I look forward to it! Believe it or not, I now have more
energy and am less tired. With four children ages 4 and under, I
used to feel tired until well into mid morning. Now, I am home from
camp, showered and raring to go at 7:15 a.m. Boot camp has totally
changed my outlook! I now begin my day feeling inspired and totally
motivated. I feel as though I can now accomplish anything and do it
with a positive outlook. I always knew exercise was important, now
I know I can actually do it before the day begins and with a smile
on my face! WHAT A FEELING!
Ruthann Dowling
Boot camp
changed my life. I consider myself to be a motivated person and so
decided to join Adventure Boot Camp with Shannon Barbato. Want to
talk about something that can turn you from one person into another
real fast- Then Boot Camp is your answer.
In starting
this camp; I began to feel like I didn't know if I could hack it
with the rest of the group. My body felt sore from the intensity of
the work-outs. After a week and a half, I couldn't think of
anything else besides how good it felt to wake up in the morning;
work out like crazy and then head off for the rest of my day!
People at work started to notice that my attitude had changed and
that I was a lot happier all the time! After the full first month
of Camp- Shannon gave each of us our own post-boot camp evaluation
and let me tell you- WOW! I went into boot camp weighing 141 pounds
(not too heavy-but all out of shape weight); 27% body fat- With
inches to lose! After the month- I lost 7 pounds; 6 1/2inches all
over my body and 2% body fat! Talk about feeling amazing! I now go
to the gym regularly- taking part in spin class; cardio kickboxing;
body sculpt; Yoga; and any and all cardio/weight training that I can
get my hands on! I now weigh 131 pounds and have never felt better
about myself! I will be joining boot camp again for the spring
sessions! CAN"T WAIT! So happy with Shannon and her constant
up-lifting attitude- nothing could have made me feel the way I do
now like Adventure Boot Camp!

FOXBORO -- For four weeks, every weekday
morning from 5:45 to 6:45, the
"recruits" hit the field at Booth
Playground for a rigorous workout at
"boot camp."
But these were not military recruits and
this boot camp was not mandatory.
There was no drill sergeant barking
orders, but rather quite the opposite -
a group of 31 women being led by Shannon
Barbato, a high-energy woman whose
enthusiasm and sense of humor
undoubtedly helped carry her "recruits"
through what she calls an "out of gym
experience."
Barbato, a local resident with a wide
background in the health and fitness
field, sees herself on the cutting edge
of a trend that has been moving across
the country.
If you watch the morning news shows on a
regular basis, you may have caught a
recent segment about the latest craze in
exercising: Boot Camp, a program first
introduced in California.
Since the 1990s, the Adventure Boot
Camp, developed by Dr. John Spencer
Ellis, an innovator in the fitness
industry, has been operating in Orange
Country, Calif.
According to its Web site, the format
was a long time in the making.
"After years of research and hours of
instruction, experimenting with various
teaching methods, camp formats and
nutrition programs," says the Web site,
"the Adventure Boot Camp method
emerged."
Barbato was looking for something that
would combine her love of people, her
experience in the health and fitness
field, and her desire to make people
feel good "both inside and out." She has
15 years' experience as a licensed
hairdresser and over six years in the
health and fitness industry, more
recently managing the group-training
department for a leading area health
club.
Adventure Boot Camp was a perfect
fit. After an intensive training
program, Barbato became a National
Exercise and Sports Trainer Association
Certified Adventure Boot Camp Trainer
and certified personal trainer. In
addition, she has a large number of
certifications covering everything from
how to deal with an emergency situation
to being able to teach various fitness
methods, which she incorporates into her
camp.
She then makes it her job to motivate,
inspire and create a fun atmosphere
while at the same time providing the
group with what she calls "a fantastic
workout."
"For this hour of the morning, she makes
it very enjoyable and very motivating,"
said Boot Camp participant Shannon
Sheehan. "It's a great group of girls."
Before beginning the program, each
participant's medical history is
reviewed. Weight and measurements are
taken before and after the four-week
program with the emphasis on
improvement. Over the course of the
20-day workouts, Shannon points out "no
day will follow the same routine and
become boring.
"Instead you can expect a mixture of
cardio exercises, some running, light
weight training, mat work, jumping rope
and sports related games."
Barbato has found that many women have
tried various exercise programs only to
become bored. Along with exercising, she
considers it important for the women to
connect as a group. After each workout,
Barbato may share an anecdote or
quotation with the group, which ranges
in ages from 15 to the mid-40s.
Her ultimate goal, in addition to
reducing body fat and showing a weight
loss, is that everyone will improve in
endurance and increase in strength and
body tone. An added benefit is enhanced
relaxation and an increase in
self-confidence.
"It will be a life-changing experience
you don't want to miss," she proclaims.
If you ask anyone after class what they
think about this early-morning program,
Shannon's ability to motivate comes
through.
"Shannon makes it so much fun. I'm
actually starting to enjoy exercising!"
said recruit Amy Butt. Fellow camper
Carolyn Marcotte is quick to add,
"Shannon's enthusiasm is motivating for
me."
The next Boot Camp runs from today
through July 20. For more information

Woman's boot camp helps
ladies reach health and
fitness goals
By Harlin Sherwin
GateHouse News Service

Karen Ryan is a 32
year-old mother of
two who has been
battling high blood
pressure and her
waistline. She knew
she needed to do
something about her
condition because "I
wanted to be healthy
and stay around my
kids." So Karen
enrolled in the
Eastern Mass
Adventure Boot Camp
in Foxboro.
The boot camp is a
personalized outdoor
program for women
which features
running, walking,
light weight
training, mat work,
jumping rope, a
variety of exercises
and sports related
games, and
emphasizes
camaraderie and
group support.
The program is run
by Shannon Barbato,
an enthusiastic
certified personal
trainer and a member
of the National
Exercise and Sports
Trainers Association
(NESTA). Barbato
wanted to channel
her love for the
outdoors and her
passion for exercise
into a unique
workout regimen,
where women could
feel comfortable
exercising and
supporting each
other. She
emphasizes that her
program is not just
for overweight
women, but also for
any woman who wants
to improve her
current fitness
level, wherever that
may be.
Barbato traveled to
California to meet
with Dr. John
Spencer Ellis, who
had been running a
successful Adventure
Boot Camp for ten
years. Barbato
worked with Dr.
Ellis, and became
certified as a NESTA
Adventure Boot Camp
Trainer.
"I started with a
small boot camp, and
people liked it, so
I decided to expand
it," she said. "I
feel that I was
meant to do this,
and consider myself
an excellent
motivator. I want to
give women the
confidence they need
to achieve their
goals. And I get
people to like the
experience of
working out, so they
want to continue
exercising after
they complete our
program."
The program begins
with a review of the
client's medical
history, and each
person is weighed
and measured. There
is also a one-hour
session with a
registered dietician
who talks about
eating habits and
portion control. The
dietician stresses
that about 60
percent of
successful weight
loss and fitness
depends on
nutrition.
Each group consists
of between 30 and 35
women. The women
range in skill level
and experience from
those who have never
exercised before to
accomplished
athletes who have
run marathons. Each
client is given a
personalized
program, and the
level of intensity
is raised slightly
each day. Every
session is different
than the day before,
so that the women
get a wide variety
of exercises to do,
and don't get bored.
Each class begins at
5:45 in the morning,
and the women attend
three to five days a
week for four weeks.
Classes are one hour
in length.
Participants range
in age from 15-55,
and come from
Eastern
Massachusetts and
Rhode
Island. Barbato
emphasizes that it
is not a boot camp
per se. No one yells
at anyone, and on
the contrary, the
group is very
supportive of one
another, and each
woman progresses at
her own pace.
For Karen Ryan the
experience surpassed
all her
expectations. "I was
uncomfortable when I
started, "she said,
"but no one judged
anyone, and I
received excellent
team support.
Working in a group
actually got me to
push myself farther,
and get more out of
it. And Shannon was
very upbeat, changed
our routines all the
time, and made it
fun.
In a typical day,
Karen might run an
obstacle course,
skip rope, or do 100
jumping jacks. One
day a week the group
would take a three
to four mile hike in
the Foxboro State
Forest. "There was
no down time or
standing around,"
she said. "And I
liked the fact that
you could go at your
own pace. Someone
may be running their
second lap, while
you're still on your
first one."
"At first I didn't
think I could make
it through, but I
lost 16 pounds in
four weeks, the most
in our group, and
took off 9 and 1/2
inches."
Karen is now
enrolling in a
special two-week
intensive course at
the boot camp, and
her eventual goal is
to lose 70 pounds in
a year.
Barbato says that a
majority of her
clients do return
for more classes.
She also stresses
that at the end of
each individual
program, all women
are weighed and
measured, so they
can see how much
progress they have
made. And each woman
is given a clear set
of exercises to do
when they finish the
program.
Because of the
success of her
Adventure Boot
Camps, Shannon is
considering adding
more camps in the
future.
If you would
like more information on
the program; you can
contact Barbato at
508-328-5236, or email
